A major venue for sport
With its unique setting and exceptional climate, Nice is ideal for sporting events. The city received the title of European City of Sport 2011.
Nice demonstrates its fantastic potential and astounding dynamism in the organisation many major international events, like the ATP Nice Open Tennis Tournament, Ironman Triathlon and the International French Riviera Nice-Cannes marathon with over 10,000 participants. In addition to such regularly scheduled events, there are other, single top-level events, like the Louis Vuitton Trophy in 2009, World Figure Skating Championships in 2012, France-Portugal handball and France-Argentina volley ball matches, the Francophonie Games in 2013 and the European Masters Games in 2015, which attracted over 7,000 athletes from the world over.
Expertise in organising events
Nice, capital of the French Riviera, is much more than a great sporting city. It is also renowned for its experience and expertise in the organisation of major cultural events with several thousand spectators: concerts by the likes of U2, Coldplay, Madonna, Muse and Rihanna, who will be performing in July 2016; occasions like the Nice Jazz Festival and the Carnival of Nice, strong symbols of the city’s festive spirit, and the International Fair of Nice.
Moreover, great world leaders have grown accustomed to choosing Nice for hosting their summits: signature in 2001 of the Treaty of Nice, a major treaty defining the decision-making conditions in preparation for enlargement of the European Union. Nice also held a NATO Summit in 2005, a Franco-Italian Summit in 2007, an EU-Russia Summit in 2008 and the France-Africa Summit in 2010.
An integrated security concept
Nice would never have been chosen, without the guarantee of a foolproof security system, which has no equivalent in France outside Paris. This was possible thanks to the cohesion and complementarity of the State and local communities.
The reliability of this integrated safety and security concept lies as much in its capacity for anticipation and risk prevention as in its responsiveness in the face of unforeseen events. This integrated concept is also effective in the area of health and sanitation and the implementation of emergency measures. It ensures that major events can be held without a hitch.
Carnival of Nice
The Carnival of Nice is the top carnival in France and one of the world’s most reputed. Held every winter, it is the most emblematic celebration in the city’s calendar of events, with a new theme each year: King of the Media in 2016.
NICE JAZZ FESTIVAL
Nice has been renowned for its famous Jazz Festival held in July since 1948. This year, some thirty concerts will be given in the city centre in Jardin Albert Ier and its open-air theatre. In 2015, the Festival held 33 concerts.
The Ironman is the best-known longest-distance world-championship triathlon on the Planet. Every year, it attracts thousands of competitors from all over the world to Promenade des Anglais, with 2,800 participants in 2015. In 2016, it is scheduled for June 5th.
EUROPEAN MASTERS GAMES
In 2015, Nice organised the 3rd European Masters Games: 11 days with over 7,000 athletes from all over the world vying in 27 sports on 40 sites in the city.
OPEN NICE COTE D AZUR
The Nice-Côte d’Azur Open Tennis Tournament is part of the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA Tour.
FOIRE DE NICE
The International Fair of Nice is the top commercial event in the Alpes-Maritimes département, attracting some 130,000 visitors to discover the latest trends and novelties in a wide range of sectors (household goods, leisure, gastronomy, arts and crafts…). This year, the Fair will be open from March 5th to 15th 2016 and we have every reason to believe that activities around the UEFA Euro 2016 will attract a great deal of interest.
